Key Benefits

With Tails Around Town, our animals experience new sights and smells, helping them build confidence and come out of their shells. Plus, you get a best friend to explore with for a day!

If there are three things everyone in animal sheltering knows, it’s this:

  • Pets are suitable for people.
  • People are good for pets.
  • When you get them together, everyone benefits.

Whether it’s a trip to Scooters for a puppuccino, a hike, or a quiet nap on your couch, our dogs love to go on adventures with humans! Getting out of the Panhandle Humane Society for a few hours or all day helps our dogs stay happy, healthy, and ready for adoption. And it’s fun for humans too!

FAQs

Who can participate in Tails Around Town?
Anyone! The primary Tails Around Town volunteer who completes the steps above must be 19+, but other adults and children are welcome to join you on Tails Around Town. NO other pets. This is a special time for the shelter dog to get extra love and attention. We want them to be the stars all day!

How long can I take a dog out of the shelter?
It’s up to you! You can take them on a car ride to get a pup cone, take them to your home for a few hours for play time and naps (if approved), or hang out with them around town for the day. We allow a time frame from 9:00 am pick up to 3:30 pm drop off. If you want an early morning time slot, please get in touch with an employee and have the paperwork filled out the day before. Walk-ins are welcome during our open hours, 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

Where can I go on Tails Around Town?
Typical locations are to your home (if approved), to a local park or trail, or a pup cup.

  • Take naps
  • Play fetch in the backyard
  • Go on a car ride to get a snack
  • Hang out on a patio around town if they’re dog-friendly
  • Go on a hike
  • Hang out with friends to meet new people

The opportunities are endless!

What can I not do with a dog?
You cannot take a Panhandle Humane Society dog to a dog park or around other pets/animals. It isn’t safe to manage an unfamiliar dog in the presence of other unfamiliar dogs and animals. Dog parks are sometimes tense places for dogs, which leads to trouble. Other restrictions might apply for specific dogs; we’ll tell you about those when you let us know what you have in mind.

  • Go to a dog park
  • Interact with other pets in the home
  • Give the dog away to someone

Which dogs are eligible to go on Tails Around Town?
All dogs are eligible for Tails Around Town if they have no major medical or behavioral needs. Dogs with a higher stress level in the kennel or a longer stay period will be first-choice candidates.
